For those people unduly burdened with some concern about "authenticity" when it comes to the contemporary electronic lusciousness of the tracks on Putumayo's Lounge series, allow me to reassure you. The sound on this disc is, in fact, what lounges in Asia sound like. The high-gloss sheen of these mellifluous downtempo tracks is exactly the sort of thing that serves as sonic window dressing in upscale bars across the continent (and subcontinent). This is thanks, primarily, to the existence of approximately 84 billion identically themed discs like this. And though the inclusion of Deepak Chopra on any music CD should immediately disqualify it from the collection of all sentient beings, the seamless (and vague) "Asian-ness" of this disc makes for a surprisingly engaging (if completely predictable) listen. So, fear not: the tiny flourishes of "Japanese" and "Indian" and "Indonesian" style that set these tracks apart from the plain ol' vanilla club music in "the West" are just fine with the folks in those faraway lands. Why should it bother you?
