Review - Rounds

Artist: Four Tet

Posted on Thu, May 22, 2003 at 4:00 AM

Nestled in that spot where oddness sounds familiar and the future seems so here, Four Tet (aka Kieran Hebden) again amazes with an album that collects found sounds, fractured beats and laptop melodies in a way that's neither cold nor clinical. In fact, "Rounds" is possessed of a warmly enveloping sound that, though sometimes bizarre (the dizzying conflagration of sounds on "Unspoken") is just as often comforting (the cyclical groove of, well, "Unspoken"). Little here is built upon standard notions of melody or even tonality -- beats are broken, samples are shredded -- but Hebden infuses into all of these odd bits a clear sense of organic composition that, though unfamiliar, is nonetheless enticing.
